The Louisville Letter
Bring a carload to Bernheim
November 6–8 plans: the final ColorFest, NuLu ceramics and a parade, Sunday games, and a Friday pottery tour.
Hi Louisville,
This weekend, I would make the group plan before making the driving plan. Bernheim’s ColorFest charges by the vehicle, so the same $30 admission covers a solo visit or a carload. That makes it worth a look for a family or a few friends who want a daytime outing together.
It is also the final ColorFest. I would go for the festival itself, with time to linger, rather than assume the whole forest will be open for a long hike.
The Plan
Bring a carload to ColorFest
Bernheim’s ColorFest runs Saturday and Sunday, November 7–8, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., at 2075 Clermont Road, Clermont. The draw is hands-on outdoor play: big slides, mud-pie making and pumpkin rolling, with food trucks and vendors if you want to add lunch or shopping.
Admission is $30 per vehicle. Buy online or at entry; check the final total before paying. The special-event ticket is required for everyone entering from 9 a.m., including members. A ticket admits one visit, with no re-entry. Food and purchases are extra.
I would aim for the morning and give this two or three hours, an editorial allowance rather than an organizer’s promised duration. Share a ride if that works for your group, and decide on lunch before you reach the food trucks.
The caveat: Forest Hill Drive is closed during ColorFest. The arboretum’s Forest Giants trail remains open, but this is not a normal full-forest hiking day. Much of the festival is on grass; the Event Center sits uphill. Ask parking attendants about accessible parking, and review the festival FAQ for route needs. Leave dogs at home. It runs rain or shine, subject to severe-weather changes; tickets are nonrefundable.
Weather for the plan
Thursday morning’s National Weather Service forecast for Louisville calls for Friday around 59°F, Saturday 56°F and Sunday 59°F, with increasing clouds Friday and sunny skies Saturday and Sunday. Weekend overnight lows are forecast around 35–38°F. Bring a layer for an early start; check the Clermont forecast before Bernheim.
Four Other Ways to Spend It
Friday evening: a ceramics opening in NuLu
Use/Form/Fired: A Survey of Ceramics opens November 6, 6–9 p.m., at Revelry, 742 East Market Street. Make this the shorter, mostly indoor option: see work by local ceramicists, then decide whether to stay in the neighborhood. The gallery does not publish an admission price for the opening; confirm if that affects your plans. Artwork and any dinner are separate spending. The show stays up through November 30 if Friday gets away from you.
Saturday morning: the Veterans Parade
The Kentucky Veterans Parade starts November 7 at 11 a.m. along East Market Street, Campbell to Hancock, in NuLu. Choose this for a street-side community outing without buying a festival badge. The organizer lists no spectator admission charge; allow for parking and purchases. Parade-route closures start at 10:30 a.m.; nearby closures begin earlier, so plan your approach before driving in. This is outdoors, with standing and crowds to account for.
Sunday indoors: sit down to a game
Game Con Junction runs November 6–8 at Louisville Marriott East, 1903 Embassy Square Boulevard. Sunday’s hours are 8 a.m.–6 p.m., with a $40 day badge; check checkout fees and the session schedule before buying. The hotel publishes a $10 daily parking rate, so confirm whether the convention offers a different arrangement. I would choose this for someone who wants a substantial block of board games or role-playing, rather than a quick browse. A badge is not a promise of a seat in a particular game.
Friday daytime: see pottery being made
Stoneware & Co., 731 Brent Street, lists Friday factory tours at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., $15 per person, lasting roughly 30–45 minutes. This is the compact indoor choice if your Friday is flexible. Call 502-582-1900 to reserve and confirm November 6 operation; the published schedule is recurring, not a separate dated booking. The tour follows clay through the production process. Painting your own piece is a separate experience.
One More Louisville Detail
Bernheim says ColorFest is ending after 30 years, with new programming to follow. The useful distinction: this is the festival’s finale, not a closure announcement for Bernheim. If you skip the crowds, you can plan a different forest visit later.
Which fits your weekend: a carload to Clermont, a NuLu stop, or a table full of games? Reply and tell me what you would pick, or which practical detail I should check next.
